Every year in March, our department holds a seminar in remembrance of Prof.Dr. Halim Doğrusöz.

Systems thinking and modelling across domains: How did I end up modelling blood cell formation dynamics?

Doç. Dr. Gönenç Yücel

This talk attempts to discuss the context-free nature of the systems thinking, systemic knowledge and modelling via using a system dynamics modelling study on hematological dynamics of neutrophil (i.e. white blood cell) formation as a demonstrative example. In the first half of the talk, we will provide a brief discussion on dynamic systemic problems and systems thinking. In this context, we will briefly introduce an approach (i.e. system dynamics modeling) for conducting simulation-based analyses on systems that pose complex dynamic management challenges. In the second half of the talk, we will present a modeling study on neutropenia tratment, which will be discussed as a dynamic management problem. With that, we primarily aim to provide the motivation (and courage) behind such an attempt, as well as the relevance of it.

Short Bio

Gönenç Yücel received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Industrial Engineering from Boğaziçi University in 2000 and 2004, respectively. After earning his PhD degree in Policy Analysis from Technology University of Delft, he joined Boğaziçi University Industrial Engineering Department where he currently works as an Associate Professor. In general, Gönenç has been focusing on simulationsupported policy and strategy analysis in his research, utilizing agent-based, as well as system dynamics models. Recently he has been conducting studies in various areas including electricity markets, sustainability transitions, innovation diffusion and influence dynamics on social networks. He is currently the director of Socio-Economic System Dynamics (SESDYN) Research Laboratory (http://sesdyn.ie.boun.edu.tr/), where systems modelling studies have been conducted in various contexts.
