Attention to undergraduate students who need to take technical elective courses! (Spring 2017) UPDATED !

Attention to undergraduate students who need to take technical elective courses!

There will be a meeting about technical elective courses on February 15th,10.00 at IE03. In order to get information about IE4XX technical elective courses, please attend this meeting.

You should follow the instructions below during the preference process.

Step 1.

Check whether or not you can login to preference system for technical elective courses (http://ie.metu.edu.tr/studentlogin)

If you cannot enter the system and see the tab for technical electives send an email to pduygu@metu.edu.tr until February 14th, 11.00 as follows:

Subject: TECHELEC_your student number_loginproblem

Main body: My name is …. I am not able to login on preference system.”

Your login information is your student ID (e.g. e174299) and your password which you use for METU email or ODTUCLASS account.

Note that your student number includes 7 digits (e.g. 1742998).

Step 2.

This semester, there are 10 undergraduate technical elective courses which can be added as technical electives by the undergraduate students.

Check the courses you can take from Table 1 and Table 2.  Syllabuses can be obtained by clicking on course names. You will make a preference list only for the undergraduate technical elective courses (courses listed in Table 1).

The students who want to take IE543 should send an e-mail to pduygu@metu.edu.tr before the preference process.

Step 3.

Check whether or not you have an overlapping must or restrictive elective courses with any of the courses in Table 1.

Check whether or not there is any courses in Table 1, you cannot take due to the prerequisite requirement. You can see the prerequisite information from Table 3.

If  there is any course you cannot take due to those two restrictions, send an email to pduygu@metu.edu.tr until February 15th, 11.00 as follows:

“Subject: TECHELEC_your student number_restriction

Main body:

My name is ….

This term I am taking … (must or restrictive elective course code you take, which has overlapping hours with some courses in Table 1)

Therefore I cannot take following courses:

… (Course codes of the courses in Table 1, which are overlapping with the must or restrictive course you are taking this term.)

/

I have not taken … courses yet (prerequisite courses)

Therefore I am not satisfying the prerequisites of the following courses

… (Course codes of the courses in Table 1, which you cannot take due to the prerequisite). ”

Be sure that you will write all of the courses that you cannot take to the end of your preferences. This is a very strict rule and if you do not obey it, all of your preferences will be updated randomly.

Step 4.

Rank all of the courses in Table 1 considering your preferences. The more you are favoring a course, the less rank you should assign to this course (e.g. rank the course you want most as 1).

While doing that be sure you placed the courses you cannot take to the end in your preference list.

Moreover, be sure you are not ranking two courses with the same number. That is, all of the offered courses should have a rank between 1 and 10, and two courses should not have the same rank.

If  you do not obey these rules, your preferences will be updated randomly.

Step 5.

Perform the following procedure until February 16th, 11.00.

Login to ie.metu.edu.tr/studentlogin.

Enter your name and surname to the first field. Do not use any Turkish character and use capital letters.

Enter your student number to the second field. Note that your student number includes 7 digits (e.g. 1742998).

Please, be careful you did not make a mistake like entering your name to the first field and entering your surname to the second field.

Rank the courses according to preferences you have determined before.

Enter the number of courses that you must take to the last field. If you would like to take more than 2 courses you need to make a valid reasoning. For this send an email to pduygu@metu.edu.tr until February 15th, 11.00 as follows:

“Subject: TECHELEC_your student number_extracourse

Main body:

My name is ….

This term I would like to take 3 elective courses because … ”

Frequent question 1

Can I enter my preferences to the system more than once?

It is better to submit your preferences only once (for us). However, if you make a mistake and submit your preferences twice, it will not be a problem.

Frequent question 2

It is possible that I can enter number of courses required more than I actually need and then drop the courses I did not like. Why I should not do that?

Because, as the number of courses you want to take increases, your chance of taking your most preferred course decreases due to the structure of the algorithm we use.

Frequent question 3

Which type of overlapping constraints are valid?

Not your part time job or nontechnical courses. Only the must and restrictive elective courses are valid for overlapping constraints.
